In 2012 the Red River Riot is back and better than ever with the focus being the best and most challenging route possible. This is not an official “race” so don’t look for prize money, sag support, or even rules. Get your spot early since the field is limited and because the entry fee goes up to $50 3/18/12.

We’re going to give you a great route to follow that will cover well over 100 miles of dirt roads in the scenic Red River area of North Texas. We’ll got a great staging area, camping spot, party central location and will provide directions for everyone to find their way from Point A to Point Z.

The long route will be around 120 miles
The short route will be around 60 miles
We may offer a mini route of around 30 miles if there is any interest
(These routes are greatness)

We will have limited beds available for a nominal fee in the “bunk house” but we have unlimited camping on the surrounding acreage. Entry fees include camping and kitchen/shower access.

Prices cover the whole weekend but no half price if you only stay one night. Email if you want a bed those will have to be prepaid and organized seperately.

Foundry Cycles is the brand that specifically appeals to me. They are designating Tradesmen throughout the country to be evangelists for the brand and promoters of all things Foundry. If a person wins this contest they are awarded the Foundry bicycle of their choice to spread the word for a year. Obviously, I’m interested in earning the spot for one of these Tradesmen.

The Foundry motto is: “It’s a tool – Not a trophy”. They go on to say: “Foundry believes that a bike is a tool, a means to an end – not a trophy. It’s about producing purpose built high-performance carbon bicycles that aren’t traveling billboards – they’re understated, they’re cool, they’re anti-pretentious, and they’re meant to be ridden”. Well to put it bluntly, Foundry hit me square in the sweet spot with those statements.

Let me set the record straight from the get go. I am not a racer, nor will I ever be mistaken for a racer. I do loves me some bike riding though. What I love almost as much as riding bikes is the cycling culture and being around other people who are passionate about bikes. Over the years my wife and myself have been involved with numerous clubs, events, and charitable causes within the North Texas cycling community. We discovered that we thoroughly enjoyed organizing and hosting these events along the way and the times we were helping out folks in need it was even more gratifying. In late 2009 we started a new venture of our own where we would put together our own cyling events in the region.

Our promotions name is The Spinistry. We host our own style of cycling events mostly geared around endurance formats. Our motto is “Long, Hard & Dirty”. We intentionally keep the vibe very grass roots and casual but our events are meant to offer a challenge to even the most accomplished riders while still allowing unique and do-able alternatetives for the weekend warriors. The main focus is fun but we definitely recognize the accomplishments of the top riders.

Our rides are predominantly gravel grinders as well as some singletrack events. The gravel grinders give us the flexibility to put on events rain or shine since most of our clay based trails can’t be ridden when wet. We want people to see things they don’t normally see. Push themselves to where they rarely go. Meet new friends and take home great memories. We want folks to have great stories to tell whenever they are talking bikes.

Obviously we can’t pull this off without our riders but our sponsors are critical to putting on these events as well. Not so much from a dollars and cents perspective but mostly along the lines of rider support and showing off new products. Everyone likes to look at, touch and ride the new stuff that is out there. Yes, we like to give away cool prizes but the after ride highlites are always the bikes and bits that folks are finally able to get up close and personal with after reading about them on the web and in magazines. And the beer and food…but definitely the bikes and bits.

Our goal in 2012 is to host an event each month as well as to participate ourselves in as many events as possible. While we have primarily focused in the North Texas to this point we are planning to expand to other areas of Texas going forward with the goal to be hosting in some of the surrounding states by the end of the year. We think this gives us a unique format to promote the Foundry line. We not only get to talk about them from a rider’s perspective but have the ability to show the bikes to hundreds of new riders each month. We are also very active with promoting ourselves on the Internet as well as personal relations with the local bike shops in our region.

And then there is this…I really, really, really want an Auger. My dream gravel bike/go anywhere anytime for any distance bike is a disc brake carbon cross bike. Charlie Jenkins @ Nautilus bicycles came back from Interbike last year and told me about Foundry and I’ve been (somewhat) patiently waiting for a local dealer to pester about them. I’ve already been trying to talk several into carrying the line and we finally have not one but two in this part of Texas. Oak Cliff Bicycle Co in Dallas and Bicycles Outback in Waco are Foundry dealers and I’m stoked about it. Maybe we’ll get one on the Fort Worth side of things and make a trifecta of it? Anyway, a new Auger would be a great addition to the family.

I do sincerely appreciate this unique opportunity that Foundry Cycles has presented. I know the competition will be tough but I think I do offer what it takes to make the final cut. Regardless of how things do sort out I look forward to what Foundry has in store for all of us who love bikes.

Yes, this is a rain or shine event! It looks like we are the only event in the state still on for this weekend. Please bring a $20 bill for registration by 10am Sunday morning. Don’t forget to change your clocks tonight.

The dirt road sections of this course are “hard” roads so there won’t be any bogs to grind through but you and your bike will get dirty. We will meet at Carson Elementary School in Decatur for parking and registration, then ride our bike up the road aways to the start/finish line on the other side of the railroad tracks.

The Texas Chainring Massacre will be a full on gravel grinder featuring a unique combination of dirt roads and desolate country roads that promises to be both scenic and challenging. Riders will be able to enjoy a fantastic route that starts and ends in the “civilized” part of the D/FW Metroplex near Valley View, TX while meandering through some scenic rural areas…

Early bird special for the first 50 riders is $20 entry fee which will move up to $30 once we hit that threshold. FYI, we already have over 20 registrations in just over a day of being on our facebook page. ALSO Dorba/Fwmba members use coupon code Member for an extra $5 off. That means you can get a $15 entry if you hop on early and are a member.

Currently parking is limited at the staging area so we will cap entries at 100. There is a 45ish mile route as well as a 90ish mile route. It’s gonna be a great ride! Must be present at the event to win the bike. We will be doing a drawing from signed waivers.

Wow, we ended up with 53 entries! More than twice what we were expecting. Thanks all for signing up. I promise the ride will be a memorable one.

A few housekeeping items…

1. Unfortunately the portajohns that have always been at the staging area parking lot weren’t there today when we went to mark course. There will be restrooms along the course but do your preride business before you get there.

3. We won’t be providing SAG but we won’t leave anyone hanging either. My number is 817-715-0533 if you run into trouble. We always recommend trying to ride with other riders when possible as well.

4. We will be there around 8am to have waivers signed. Riders’ meeting will be 8:45 so try to be there by 8:30 at the latest.

5. Feel free to explore the Stock Yards or anything else you come across. Text me if you feel you are going to detour for several hours though. We won’t be having a formal check in or an official sweep process since folks can meander if they choose to.

6. Course is marked but marking can come down for various reasons. The Trinity Trail will get you directly to Gateway Park if you get off course. Most folks on the TT are very helpful if you need directions.

MonsterCross Monday will be a unique, “urbanesque” adventure ride. Surfaces will include singletrack, doubletrack, paved roads, brick roads, paved trail and even some hike-a-bike.

Staging is from Gateway Park in Fort Worth, TX and the route will include the River Legacy trail in Arlington, TX as well as the Fort Worth Stock Yards, the Trinity Trail and a preview of the new trail across the river from Gateway Park. Course will be marked and GPS tracks will be made available.

This ride will be open to bikes of any type and part of the fun is figuring out which would be the weapon of choice. Online registration only since we will not be able to collect funds day of. Please contact us if you need to make payment arrangements that don’t include a credit card.
