USA Cycling Event USA Cycling Permit # 2012-2688

The Midnight Massacre is a metric century(ish) gravel grinder starting at 8 pm near Ponder, TX. The route will primarily be made up of dirt/gravel roads as well as some short and desolate paved segments. Headlights and tail lights are required but this should be an excellent way to beat the summer heat in Texas and take in a new type of adventure.

UPDATE…We will be offering a shorter 41 mile route as an alternate. This would make a great intro to gravel grinding or allows the early risers to get to bed at a decent hour.

Organizers will NOT be providing any sag vehicles or support during the route. You are welcome to have your own support vehicles out on the course if you are not comfortable participating in a self supported metric century at night.

  1. Will there be anywhere to refill water along the route?

    • We will set up an unmanned aid station out on course with water jugs but try to pack enough to go the distance just in case. There are NO stores or facilities along the route and there is no way to guarantee that the aid station won’t be messed with.

      • Thanks, did not see any stores or anything on the map but wanted to make sure I was not overlooking something

    • I would like to pre- ride this on July 14, in the morning, start around 7am, is anyone interested?

  2. Looking forward to the ride. Can you tell me about the start/finish area. Any place to park an RV? Willing to pay property owner. Sounds like I will be too exhausted and/or impaired to drive back to Waco at that hour.

    • The staging area is a convenience store/truck stop. There’s plenty of parking but no hookups and the store is not open 24 hours. I doubt they would have any problem with you parking there for the night. I think I remember seeing an RV park down the road just a bit but I’m not seeing it in a quick Google search.

  3. Looks like I will leave the RV home after all. What kind of pace do you expect? What will the expected finish time be for fast riders vs slow pokes on the long course? Also what is best way to have sag driver meet up with rider on course? I.e. if I want to meet up with my driver 20 miles after start, and then again at 40 miles, should he drive around the course and wait for me, or can he pass other slower riders on course to meet me down course? Can you tell me approximate mile marker of the unmanned water stop?

    • Fast pace should be near 20 mph average. Slow pokes will be around 12 mph. I would prefer support cars to not drive through the field but to take direct (paved) routes to meetup points. The roads are going to be super dusty unless some rain pops up. Support cars trailing the field as a sweep are fine though. I sent an email to all participants with instructions on how to download the course to view on Google maps and Garmins. Unmanned stop will be approximately 42 miles into the long course. I know which road I want to have it on, just not the specific spot just yet.

  4. Will a road bike work or is this a cross/MTB thing only?
